Portland and its suburbs, along with Salem and Eugene in the Willamette Valley, hold most of the population. Bend in central Oregon has grown quickly on outdoor recreation and remote work, while the coast and the eastern high desert form smaller markets. Semiconductors, including Intel's operations in Hillsboro, forest products, agriculture and athletic apparel shape the economy.
The Oregon Real Estate Agency licenses brokers and principal brokers, and brokers must work under a principal broker's supervision. Closings typically run through an escrow company that manages funds and documents. Oregon has no sales tax, and the Portland metro operates under an urban growth boundary that limits outward expansion and affects where new homes can be built.
Portland, Hillsboro and Beaverton form one metro, but city and county tax structures differ, so an agent should explain how local taxes affect your monthly cost. Eugene and Salem offer lower prices, and Bend draws second-home buyers along with remote workers. Ask candidates about wildfire risk, insurance availability and how they price homes in neighborhoods where sales have slowed.
